Proper Installation of a Spin-On Oil Filter
The purpose of the engine oil filter is to remove harmful contaminants from the oil stream that may cause internal engine component damage. For the filter to work properly, and have a full life, it is critical that the filter be installed properly. Proper filter installation is often overlooked or misunderstood.
Installing a Trufilter oil filter properly is very simple, following the steps below.

- Open the Trufilter canister and remove the filter element.
- Inspect the element and clean it of debris.
- Clean the filter canister and base thoroughly.
- Inspect all parts and o-rings for damage.
- Replace any damaged parts.
- Once the filter is dry re-assemble the filter.
- Apply a thin film of clean engine oil on the base seal.
- Spin the filter onto the engine just until the gasket touches the mounting base.
- Tighten the filter another 1-1/2 turns.
- Add oil to the engine stopping one half quart shy of the stated capacity.
- Add additional oil one pint at a time until the engine is filled to the proper level. Be sure to check the dip-stick to insure the proper level.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
