Proper Engine Filter Identification

Some demestic vehicles are offered with more than one engine of the same displacement. While these engines are the same size they often take different filters. In order to locate the proper filter for such vehicles it is important to properly identify the engine in your vehicle. To do this you must match the engine code with your vehicles identification (VIN) number. When needed, we list engines codes in our application section and in our filter search results. Follow the instructions below for your vehicle manufacturer to correctly match your engine code to your VIN number.

Ford, Chrysler, and GM

If your vehicle was manufactured Ford, Chrysler, or GM and was manufactured from 1972-1980, match the VIN code in our system with the fifth (5th) character in your vehicle's VIN number. If your vehicle is a Ford, Chrysler, or GM product and was manufactured between 1981-2002 match the eighth (8th) character of your vehicle's VIN number to the code provided. 

Jeep

If your vehicle is a Jeep product and was manufactured between 1972 through 1974 and it's Serial Number is less than 100001, match the eighth character of your vehicle's VIN to the code provided. For Jeep products manufactured between 1974 and 1980 match the seventh character of the vehicle's VIN to the code provided. For Jeep products manufactured between 1981 and 1988 use the fourth (4th) character to match the code provided. For Jeep products manufactured between 1989 and 2002 match the eighth (8th) character of the VIN to the code provided. 

AMC/Eagle (Except Jeep)

If your vehicle was manufactured by AMC/Eagle (except Jeep) between 1974 through 1980 match the code provided to the seventh (7th) character of the vehicle's VIN. If the vehicles was manufactured between 1981 through 1988 match the fifth (5th) character of the VIN to the code provided. If the vehicle was manufactured from 1989 through 2002 use the eighth (8th) character of the VIN to match the code provided.
